2008 Holiday Parade: SCPL Precision Book Truck Drill Team
Together with my colleagues, I jointed the Library Precision Book Truck Drill Team Parade on 6 December 2008 . This is my third library parade (La Selva Beach: 2000 & 2003) and first parade in the city of Santa Cruz since I started to work for Santa Cruz Public Libraries in 1999.
I have truly enjoyed all these parades, through which I am reinforced time and again the close tie between the community and the public library. The 2008 parade is especially special for me on many levels: beautiful December weather, holiday atmosphere, family reunion and a meticulously choreographed drill team all in tri-colored uniforms against a gloomy economy.

Capturing CHINA: 20 YEARS OF CHANGE
China: 20 years of Change, 1987-2007, a photo exhibit by accomplished professional photographer Paul Titangos, opened with a reception on Friday, August 1, 2008 from 5 to 10 PM, as part of the First Friday Art Tour. The show will have a closing ceremony also on Friday, September 5 at Titangos Photography Studio, 216-A Fern Street, near downtown Santa Cruz.
If Michelangelo Antonioni's Chung Kuo/Cina/China irretrievably recorded many valuable historical moments vanished or vanishing from today's China, as Dr. Ying Huang has pointed in the previous post, Paul Titangos succeeds in capturing China's last twenty years, and in documenting the many profound changes that have taken place in China, from street scenes in large cities, to life in remote agricultural and rural settings. Many of lifestyles and environs photographed by Titangos in the 80’s and 90’s have faded from existence, replaced by colorful and vibrant images depicting China’s emphatic emergence into the 21st century. The prints, in both color and black and white, also chronicle the photographer’s migration through film and digital media over the same twenty-year period.

Appreciating Michelangelo Antonioni
Dr. Ying Huang pointed out an increasing new appreciation of Michelangelo Antonioni in China. Many a private shot he managed to sneak into his Chung Kuo/Cina/China in 1972 has irretrievably recorded many valuable historical moments vanished or vanishing from today's China. Although the filmmaker was severely denounced then by the Chinese authorities as "anti-Chinese" and "anti-communist," the film had its second chance in Beijing in November 25th, 2004, when Beijing Film Festival hosted a film festival to honor the works of Michelangelo Antonioni.
The whole process of appreciation only takes 36 years.

Playing with Colors

12-Year-Old Eric's Adventure on YouTube
Last time when my brother called and told me that Eric Huang, his 12-year-old son and my nephew, had made a series of videos and successfully posted them on to YouTube. He tried to explain to me what YouTube was, but was cut short by my reply that I knew about it. It was one of the 23 things we need to grasp for our library training program.
All of sudden our conversation was conducted on a much higher and more animated technical level. Aunt Hui-Lan is not just a librarian/knitter. She might know a few social networking technologies.
A brief background information about the following video clip: Eric formed his Pi Guy Productions in November 3, 2007. Since then, he has had 11 subscribers; and his videos have been viewed more than 193 times. In his homepage, Eric states that, "Most of the videos are random Pikachu videos, and they are usually the best, but some are different. Please comment and/or subscribe if you like the videos that you see. Also note that I made the background image."
